Grumpy Cat, the world-famous cat whose scowl is used on memes everywhere, died at the age of 7. The cat, whose real name was
Tardar Sauce , the adorable grumpy, with her face “frowning” permanently, became an Internet sensation at only 5 months of age, when a picture of it was published on Reddit in 2012. In 48 hours, image had been viewed more than a million times. Grumpy Cat traveled the world making appearances on television and, in 2014, even starred in her own Christmas movie. Madame Tussauds in San Francisco revealed a wax work of her in 2015. The face of Grumpy has starred in thousands of memes with many people who decide to share them again after hearing the news of her death. She had about 8.5 million followers on Facebook, 2.4 million followers on Instagram, 1.5 million followers on Twitter and about 260,000 YouTube subscribers. She appeared in almost 900 articles in her own Internet store and served as a “spokescat” for the Friskies cat food, appeared on the cover of New York magazine, and was the inspiration for the best-selling Grumpy Cat, A Grumpy Book. The image of Grumpy Cat was recognized as Meme of the year at the 2013 Webby Awards.
Despite the attention of the best professionals and loved ones, hir family said that Grumpy Cat died on Tuesday in the arms of its owner, Tabatha, after complications with a recent infection in the urinary tract.
